Course summary
The Global Maternal Health MSc is a flexible programme designed to develop your leadership skills with a particular focus on international aspects of childbirth and maternal health, including development and scaling up of midwifery to improve quality, accessibility, and safety of maternity care globally.
You have the opportunity to discuss key issues in global maternal health and healthcare provision in multi-professional and interdisciplinary contexts. You will gain a solid foundation of research skills and applied data analysis to support and extend your role as an evidence-based practitioner, researcher, educator, advocate or development worker.
Who is this course for?
This programme is suitable for graduates from a wide background relative to global maternal health, including midwifery, nursing, medicine, public health, policy, sociology, anthropology and law.
Specialisms:
The programme develops your research skills and critical thinking and provides the opportunity to undertake an international elective placement and to conduct an implementation and improvement project under expert supervision, laying the foundations for independent research and service development in the future.
Career:
This programme has been developed to allow you the greatest possible flexibility in developing specialist skills and knowledge at a highly demanding academic and practical level. The programme will prepare you for a range of roles including:
Consultant Midwife
Clinical leadership in high-, middle- or low-income settings
Academic role including teaching and research
International development related work both at clinical and managerial level
Maternity or public health policy work
Gain experience
You will undertake a placement of 30 hours as part of the Global Maternal Health Innovation and Implementation module.
This may include:
A clinical, research or policy improvement project in your own setting
A clinical, research or policy improvement project in an alternative setting arranged via our partner network
A placement with the World Health Organisation (WHO)
A virtual placement in a setting arranged via our partner network. Students may also agree alternative placement options with their module leader.
The opportunities available will be dependent on current international travel advice, restrictions or other external factors and will be discussed with your module leader at the outset of the programme.
The WHO placements are unpaid and normally involve a stay in Geneva, where students observe and participate in maternity policy related work that the WHO is engaged in. In some cases, this could also involve a placement with a WHO office in a different country.
Teaching and assessment:
The programme is tailored specifically to meet the needs of both UK and international students, as it is delivered in a flexible manner with the possibility of opting for online only or to enhance student choice, this is complemented by the option of taking elective modules in intensive on-site mode.
